🗣️ ① Speech Act Theory (locutionary · illocutionary · perlocutionary) 3-layer act ▼
Core Definition
A speech act is the action a speaker performs by producing an utterance. Austin analyzes it into three simultaneous acts: the locutionary act, the illocutionary act, and the perlocutionary act.

speech act는 발화로 수행하는 행위다. Austin은 이를 동시에 일어나는 세 행위로 분석한다. (performative/constative 이분법을 포함한 Austin 프레임 일부는 표준 도입 — refs 미수록.)

3 components
Locutionary act
의미 있는 언어 표현을 산출하는 기본 발화 자체소리·단어·구조 + sense/reference
Illocutionary act
발화의 communicative force로 수행되는 행위= illocutionary force (진술·요청·약속·경고)
Perlocutionary act
발화가 청자에게 일으키는 실제 효과= perlocutionary effect (설득·놀람·행동)

변별 핵심: illocutionary = 화자의 force/의도, perlocutionary = 청자에게 미친 결과/effect. 둘을 바꿔 진술하면 X.

Speech act = 3개 층위가 한 발화에서 동시에 수행됨 예: "It's freezing in this room." ① LOCUTIONARY 이 문장을 발화함 (소리·단어·구조) ② ILLOCUTIONARY (force = 화자 의도) 간접 요청: 난방 켜 달라 ③ PERLOCUTIONARY (effect = 청자 결과) 청자가 창문을 닫음
예문 — 세 층위 배정
I'll have the coffee ready by seven. — locutionary: 이 문장을 발화함 / illocutionary: 약속(promise) / perlocutionary: 청자가 안심함. Watch out for the ice! — illocutionary: 경고(warning) / perlocutionary: 청자가 걸음을 멈춤. You're fired. (상사가 적법하게 발화) — illocutionary: 해고 선언 / perlocutionary: 직원이 충격을 받음. 같은 locutionary act라도 맥락에 따라 다른 illocutionary force를 가질 수 있다(It's cold in here = statement 또는 request).
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Speech Acts – Loc/Illoc/Perloc)

세 종류 구분 + 빈칸에 illocutionary 채우기, "speaker's intent(praise/criticize/warn/threaten)" = illocutionary로 식별. 청자에게 미친 효과는 perlocutionary로 분리하는 것이 핵심 함정. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).

📜 ② Performative vs Constative · Felicity Conditions 행위 수행 발화 ▼
Performative vs Constative ※ Austin 표준 이분법, refs 미수록
A performative utterance performs an action rather than describing a state of affairs (I promise to repay you, I name this ship Aurora); a constative states something true or false (The ship is in the harbor).

performative는 발화가 곧 행위를 수행하는 문장이고, constative는 참·거짓을 진술하는 문장이다.

Performative verb — 4 조건
A performative verb names the illocutionary force it performs (confess, warn, promise, apologize, declare). To have its performative sense the utterance must be (i) positive · (ii) present tense · (iii) first-person agent · (iv) refer to a specific event; the adverb hereby can be inserted.

performative verb는 자기가 수행하는 illocutionary force를 직접 명명한다. positive·present·first-person·specific 네 조건을 모두 충족해야 performative sense를 가진다(하나라도 어기면 단지 상태 기술 = representative).

I hereby resign from the committee. — 사임 행위 수행(hereby 삽입 가능). I resigned from the committee last year. — 과거시제 → performative sense 없음, 단지 상태 기술(constative). 시제·인칭·긍정·특정성 중 하나라도 어기면 그 발화는 행위를 수행하지 않는다.
Felicity conditions — 5종

Felicity conditions는 어떤 speech act가 성공적(felicitous)으로 성립하기 위한 조건들이다.

General
청자가 그 locution을 이해할 수 있어야 함
Propositional content
내용이 행위에 맞음(threat은 미래 행위 관련)
Preparatory
현실 전제 충족(청자가 요청을 수행 가능)
Sincerity
화자가 그 행위를 실제로 의도함
Essential
발화가 양측에게 그 행위의 실현으로 간주됨
I promise to email you the draft tonight. — 성공하려면 화자가 실제로 보낼 의도(sincerity) + 보낼 능력(preparatory) 필요. 청자가 그 언어를 전혀 모르면 위협은 general condition 위반으로 실패. 친구가 장난으로 You're under arrest! — 권한 없음 → essential/preparatory 위반, 선언 실패.
↪️ ③ Direct & Indirect Speech Acts 형식 vs 기능 ▼
Core Definition
A direct speech act uses a sentence type with its canonical function; an indirect speech act uses a sentence type to perform a different function. The literal force is secondary; the intended force is primary.

문장 유형은 각각 기본 기능과 짝지어진다 — declarative–statement, interrogative–question, imperative–command/request. 기본 기능대로 쓰면 direct, 다른 기능으로 쓰면 indirect speech act다.

indirect가 일반적으로 더 공손하게 느껴진다. 다만 청자가 문자 그대로(direct) 반응하면 의도된 force를 놓칠 수 있다.

Sentence type ↔ function
Sentence typeCanonical function (direct)Indirect 사용 예
DeclarativestatementI can't hear the lecture over here. → 요청
InterrogativequestionWould you mind shutting the gate? → 요청
Imperativecommand/requestHand me the wrench. → 그대로 명령(direct)
예문
Would you mind shutting the gate? — 의문형식이지만 primary force = 요청(indirect). I can't hear the lecture over here. — 평서형식이지만 자리를 바꿔 달라는 요청(indirect). Hand me the wrench. — 명령형식이 명령 기능(direct request). Do you happen to know the way to the station? — 청자가 Yes. 로만 답하면 indirect request를 놓친 것. It's getting awfully late. — 손님에게 발화 시 "이제 가셔도 된다"는 간접 암시.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Primary / Indirect Illocutionary Force)

여러 발화 중 primary·indirect force를 갖는 것 고르기: 선언 형식이 request(I declare the meeting open soon), 명령 형식이 expressive(Get well soon). literal force와 intended(primary) force의 분리가 핵심. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).

🤝 ④ Cooperative Principle + Grice's Four Maxims 대화 협력 원리 ▼
Cooperative Principle (Grice)
Grice's Cooperative Principle: make your conversational contribution such as is required, at the stage at which it occurs, by the accepted purpose of the talk exchange — i.e. participants are assumed to cooperate.

Cooperative Principle는 대화 참여자가 대화 목적에 맞게 협력한다는 가정이다. 화자가 maxim을 글자 그대로 지키는 게 아니라, 청자가 마치 지켜진 것처럼 해석한다 — maxim이 깨진 듯 보이면 청자는 협력을 복원하는 추론(implicature)을 끌어낸다.

Four Maxims
Quantity
필요한 만큼만 정보 — 과다·과소 금지
Quality
참이라 믿고 근거 있는 것만 말함
Relation (Relevance)
관련된 것을 말함
Manner
명확히 — 모호·중의·장황 회피, 순서 있게
A: How many siblings do you have? B: I have two sisters. — Quantity 준수. Quality flouting: 발표가 엉망인데 That was a flawless presentation. (반어 → 실제론 형편없다는 함축). Relation: A: Has the bus come? B: The shops are already closing. — 직접 답 대신 관련 정보로 시간 추론. Quantity 위반(과소): A: What did you cook? B: Food. — 정보 부족 → 더 말하기 싫다는 함축.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Conversational Maxim – Maxim of Relation)

직접 요청 없이 관련 발화로 의도가 전달되는 대화에서 어떤 maxim이 작동하는지 식별: W: Isn't it too cold? M: I'll turn on the stove. → 청자가 Maxim of Relation으로 request로 해석. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).

💭 ⑤ Conversational Implicature (flouting · generalized vs particularized) 함축 · 취소 가능 ▼
Core Definition
A conversational implicature is an unstated proposition the hearer infers from the CP and maxims plus context, over and above the literal meaning. It is calculable (CP+maxim으로 추론 가능) and cancellable / defeasible (명시적으로 취소 가능).

conversational implicature는 글자 그대로의 의미를 넘어 CP·maxim·맥락으로 청자가 추론하는 함축이다.

Flouting vs Violation
Flouting
청자가 알아채도록 의도적으로 maxim 위반함축 전달 (irony · hyperbole · sarcasm)
(quietly) Violate
청자 모르게 위반(예: 거짓말)함축을 의도하지 않음
Generalized vs Particularized
Particularized
특정 맥락에 의존하는 함축그 맥락에서만 함축 발생
Generalized
발화의 일반적 특징에서 발생특별 배경 없이 거의 모든 맥락
Particularized — A: Are you joining us for dinner? B: I have a deadline at midnight. → (이 맥락에서) 안 간다. 같은 문장 I have a deadline at midnight. 은 다른 맥락에선 그 함축이 없음 → particularized임을 보여줌. Generalized — She walked into a house. → (특별 배경 없이) 그 집은 그녀의 집이 아니다. Flouting(과장): 가벼운 부탁에 I've asked you a thousand times! → 자주 부탁했다는 함축. Cancellability: Some of the guests left — in fact, all of them did. → some의 함축(not all)이 취소됨.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Conversational Implicature / CP)

implicature가 Cooperative Principle·maxim으로 설명된다는 지문 출제. flouting(의도적·함축 전달)과 quiet violation(거짓말)의 구분이 핵심 변별. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).

📊 ⑥ Scalar & Conventional Implicature · Entailment vs Implicature cancel 가능 여부 ▼
Scalar implicature
Scalar implicature (a generalized conversational implicature): asserting a weaker item on a scale implicates the negation of the stronger items. On ⟨all, most, many, some⟩, using some implicates not all. It is cancellable.

scale에서 약한 항을 쓰면 강한 항을 부정하는 함축이다(⟨all…some⟩에서 some → not all). generalized conversational implicature의 하위이고 cancellable하다.

Conventional implicature ※ 표준, refs 미수록
Conventional implicature: a non-truth-conditional meaning conventionally attached to particular lexical items, independent of context and NOT cancellable. but(contrast), therefore(consequence), even(contrary to expectation), yet, manage to(effort).

특정 단어(but/therefore/even)에 관습적으로 묶인 비진리조건적 함축으로 context와 무관하고 취소 불가다. cancel 가능 여부가 conversational implicature와의 핵심 변별점.

변별 표 — cancellable / truth-conditional
유형cancellable?truth-conditional?context 의존?
Entailment취소 불가진리조건의 일부X
Conversational implicature취소 가능아님의존(particularized) / 일반(generalized)
Conventional implicature취소 불가아님X (lexical item에 묶임)

핵심: entailment는 진리조건의 일부라 취소 불가, conversational implicature는 취소 가능, conventional implicature는 취소 불가지만 진리조건과 무관하다.

예문
Scalar: A few of the reviewers liked the draft. → 전부는 아니다(cancellable: …actually, all of them did). Scalar: The water is warm. → 뜨겁지는 않다(⟨hot, warm⟩). Conventional(but): She is thrifty but generous. → 검소함과 관대함이 대조된다는 함축(취소 불가). Conventional(even): Even the interns finished early. → 인턴이 끝낼 거라 기대 안 했다는 함축. Entailment: The gardener pruned every rose. ⊨ The gardener pruned a rose. (취소 시 모순 → not cancellable).
🧊 ⑦ Presupposition · Triggers · Constancy under Negation 부정해도 유지 ▼
Core Definition
A presupposition is background information the speaker takes for granted as already true. It is identified by the constancy under negation test: negating (or questioning) the sentence leaves the presupposition intact.

presupposition은 화자가 발화 시 이미 참이라고 전제하는 배경 정보다. constancy under negation test로 판별한다 — 문장을 부정·의문화해도 전제는 유지된다.

함정: presupposition은 문장을 부정하면 사라지는 것이 아니라 유지된다.

Constancy under negation — S와 ¬S가 같은 presupposition P를 공유 S: Owen has quit smoking. (긍정문) ¬S: Owen hasn't quit smoking. (부정문) P: Owen used to smoke. 긍정·부정 모두 P를 presuppose → 유지
Presupposition triggers
Definite expression
the dean of the college → 그 인물이 존재
Factive verb
regret · realize · be aware · be odd → 보문 참
Implicative verb
manage · forget
Change-of-state verb
stop · begin · continue
Iterative
again · return
Cleft / Wh-question
It was X that… → someone did it

함정 — non-factive: think, believe, claim, maintain, be likely는 보문의 참을 전제하지 않는다(presupposition trigger 아님).

예문
Definite: The dean of the college didn't resign. → 그 college에 dean이 존재한다(부정해도 유지). Factive: Noah regrets / doesn't regret selling the car. → Noah가 차를 팔았다(유지). Iterative: The comet appeared / didn't appear again. → 그 혜성이 전에 나타났다. Non-factive 함정: The witness claimed / didn't claim that the safe was empty. → 금고가 비었는지 전제 안 됨.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Truth Condition – Entailment & Presupposition)

두 문장쌍의 의미 관계를 entailment/presupposition으로 분류하고 truth 조건으로 설명: John doesn't eat vegetables ⊨ doesn't eat broccoli(entailment); John regretted telling a lie ≫ John told a lie(presupposition). 핵심 변별 — 부정하면 entailment는 사라지고 presupposition은 유지. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).

🎯 ⑧ Politeness · Face · FTA · Deixis face · 맥락 지시 ▼
Politeness · Face · FTA ※ Brown & Levinson 표준, refs 미수록
Face is a person's public self-image. Positive face = the desire to be approved of and to belong; negative face = the desire to be unimpeded and autonomous. A face-threatening act (FTA) intrinsically threatens face (requests, orders, refusals, criticisms).

face는 공적 자아상으로, positive face(인정·소속 욕구)와 negative face(불간섭·자율 욕구)로 나뉜다. FTA는 상대의 face를 위협하는 행위(요청·명령·거절·비판)다.

전략(strategies): bald on record(완화 없음) · positive politeness(연대감 호소) · negative politeness(deference·hedge·간접성) · off record(간접 암시).

Negative politeness(indirect): I'm so sorry to bother you, but could you possibly move your bag? — negative face 배려. Positive politeness: Hey buddy, give us a hand with this, would you? — 친밀감·소속 강조. Bald on record: Pass the report. — 완화 없음(친밀하거나 긴급한 상황).
Deixis
Deixis = expressions whose reference depends on the utterance context (Greek 'pointing via language'). 핵심 3종 + 확장 2종.
Person deixis
I, you, she
Spatial deixis
here, there, thisproximal ↔ distal
Temporal deixis
now, then, tomorrow

확장: social deixis(사회적 관계·honorific 부호화) · discourse deixis(담화 내 부분 지시: the former, as noted above).

proximal(화자에 가까움): this / here / now  ↔  distal(화자에서 멂): that / there / then.

Deictic shifting

발화를 새 맥락에서 재보고할 때 맥락 의존 deictic(here→there, tomorrow→the next day, I→새 화자)은 shift한다. yesterday, five years ago, ten years ago, in an hour도 보고 맥락을 기준으로 다시 해석되는 relative temporal deictic이다. 고유명사와 절대 날짜(예: May 10, 2020)만 유지된다.

Shift: John이 I'll meet her here tomorrow 라고 한 것을 다음 날 다른 곳에서 보고 → …he'd meet her there the next day. 재보고: Ben은 유지되지만, ten years ago는 새 보고 맥락을 기준으로 다시 해석되어 shift한다.
📝 출제 각도 (Pragmatics – Deixis – Deictic Expressions)

보고 맥락 전환 시 shift가 필요한 deictic expression 찾기 + 이유 설명: here · in an hour · I · yesterday · five years ago 는 shift, 고유명사와 절대 날짜(예: May 10, 2020)는 유지. deictic shifting의 맥락 의존/독립 변별이 핵심. 메가쌤 기출 분석 보고 각도(연도 stamp 없음 → 미표기).
